Ransom R. Olvey was born on 03 Feb 1833 in Rush, Indiana, USA; died on 20 Jul 1908 in Fortville, Hancock, Indiana, USA; was buried in Green, Hancock, Indiana, USA.

Notes:

Ransom enlisted in Co. B, 12th IN Volunteer Inf., April 1861 and was discharged 19 May 1862. He then enlisted in Co. C, 79th IN Inf. on 15 Aug 1862 and was mustered out 7 Jun 1865 in Nashville, TN.

Ransom fought in 17 battles during his enlistment in the civil war, including the battles of Bull Run,
Gettysburg, and Winchester and was wounded in the eye at Mossy Creek. In Aug. 1869, He applied for an "Invalid's" pension based on the fact that he had completely lost the sight in his left eye, suffered from chronic diarrhea the result of exposure to bad food and water in Knoxville in 1863, and chronic rheumatism as a result of exposure to cold rain and mud. He had also been crushed against a wagon by a wild mule while assigned as a teamster in Huntsville, AL, in Jan. 1864. The pension was granted and Ransom collected $12 per month paid quarterly, until 1888, when it was increased to $17 per month. In filling out a form for the increase, one of the questions asked was "what record of marriage exists?" to which Ransom replied "Too girls"!

In an 1890 contest to guess the number of inhabitants of Indiana, Ransom won first prize, a Vose piano valued at $700.

He was a member of the GAR and a lifelong Democrat.

He and Martha are buried in the southwest corner of the Maple Grove or Olvey cemetery in Hancock Co. The cemetery is located north of the big Lee Olvey house on State Rt. 234 at Sugar Creek.
