- James was the son of Austin and Polly Ann Gimlin, both born in Kentucky. He was also the nephew of Hannon Gimlin, who married Margaret Boyd, the widow of Andrew Jackson Killian, and mother of Emily Frances Killian. The Gimlin family moved to Missouri after 1850, then later to Boone County, Arkansas. James and some of his descendants later moved to Texas, then to Oklahoma, and finally settled in Scott County, Arkansas.
