- Patsy Hicks was listed in the census of 1820 in Surry Co., NC as a head of household, "freed colored woman" age 25-45, with two freed colored males under 14 years. In 1830, a freed colored woman, age 24-36 was listed in the household of Wiseman Olvey. There was also a freed colored male under 10 yrs. I have not been able to trace her after 1830.
In Aug. 1830, a bastardy bond was posted in Wilkes Co., the State vs. Patsy Hicks and Wiseman Olvey charged with Adultery. If they were married in 1829, why was such a charge made? Unless it had to do with the child?
Patsy was a nickname for Martha used frequently in the 18th and 19th century.
